• Study the artist’s signature use of chiaroscuro and view a range of his most famous paintings in situ, including The Calling of St Matthew, Beheading of St John the Baptist, and The Seven Works of Mercy

Depart Heathrow 1245 on British Airways, arriving Rome 1620. Transfer to Hotel della Torre Argentina for three nights. Evening lecture: The Challenge of Mother Rome: Religion, Politics and Society, Patrons and Critics.
Morning: Santa Maria del Popolo (The Conversion of St Paul and The Crucifixion of St Peter), San Luigi dei Francesi (The Calling of St Matthew), Sant’ Agostino (Madonna di Loreto). Afternoon: Vatican Pinacoteca (Entombment) and Galleria Doria Pamphilj (Rest on the Flight into Egypt and Penitent Magdalene).
Morning: walking tour including Pinacoteca Girolamini. Afternoon: Certosa di San Martino (further Neopolitan Caravaggisti works). Flight to Catania and transfer to Siracusa for two nights at Grand Hotel Ortigia.
By coach to Messina for the Museo Regionale (Raising of Lazarus, Adoration of the Shepherds).
