ACE is delighted to announce a return to Stratford-upon-Avon to enjoy highlights from the 2024 summer season at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. In the company of Dr Jessica Chiba of the Shakespeare Institute, we will become immersed in the playwright’s world through a series of performances, lectures and local visits. It is a particularly exciting time to return to Stratford, as new Co-Artistic Directors at the RSC, Daniel Evans and Tamara Harvey, present their first season of work.

Our tour opens with a special early evening abridged performance of As You Like It, presented in the delightful surroundings of the Swan Theatre Gardens. This pastoral comedy, which famously features Shakespeare’s ‘Seven Ages of Man’ speech and follows the romance between Rosalind and Orlando, will transport both them and us to the atmospheric Forest of Arden, where poetry and bewilderment abound.

We pause between the two Shakespeare plays to enjoy a new production of Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s social satire The School for Scandal, “a brilliant biting comedy styled to the nines with period flair”. Set in late 17th century London, the story follows the schemes of Lady Sneerwell as she sets out to wreak havoc on the inheritance of young rake Charles Surface.

Our tour builds to a climax with a thrilling performance of Pericles, which will take us on an epic journey with the Prince of Tyre as he battles grief, storms and shipwrecks. New Co-Artistic Director Tamara Harvey will make her debut alongside a wonderful cast including the award-winning actor Alfred Enoch, whose credits include Romeo at Shakespeare’s Globe, in the title role.

The evening performances will be complemented by a series of lectures given by our Tour Director introducing each play, as well as post-performance discussions offering the opportunity to reflect on each production. We also look forward to a guest lecture from Professor Michael Dobson, Director of the Shakespeare Institute.

We will also make the most of our time in Stratford to delve further into Shakespeare’s life, with a guided historical walking tour and visits to Shakespeare’s Birthplace, Schoolroom and New Place. The site of the New Place is where the playwright’s family home once stood, and it has now been creatively reimagined with tranquil gardens and specially commissioned artworks to evoke its role in Shakespeare’s life and times.

Our base for this tour is the four-star boutique Hotel Indigo in the heart of Stratford-upon-Avon. Occupying a 1500s half-timbered building, Georgian townhouse and modern annexe, this stylish and comfortable property is located just a few minutes’ walk from the theatres.

This tour will be led by Jessica Chiba, PhD, an Assistant Professor at the Shakespeare Institute, University of Birmingham. Her research focuses on the intersection between Shakespeare and philosophy, especially where questions about language overlap with issues surrounding knowledge and existence. She is currently working on a project entitled Shakespeare’s Untranslatability. Jessica gained her BA, MA and PhD at Royal Holloway, University of London, and taught at Royal Holloway and the University of Surrey before taking up a Leverhulme Early Career Research Fellowship at the Shakespeare Institute.
