Roman Sussex | August 2026

Emperor Claudius initiated the Roman Invasion of Britain in 43 CE, resulting in the construction of strategic defenses along the English Channel, aiming to deter coastal attacks and facilitate trade between the newly acquired territory and mainland Europe. The Romans sought both iron resources and to establish their dominance, with Roman Sussex central to their expansion into the Celtic tribal regions.

Chichester, a key settlement established in the 1st century CE, offers insights into the Roman and Norman eras. The city, originally named Noviomagus Reginorum, was fortified under Titus Flavius Vespasianus, who later became Emperor Vespasian. While little survives above ground, Chichester’s extensive Roman history is evident in its street layout, surviving walls and gateways. As we explore its boundaries, we will be able to trace the Roman forum as well as the remains of residences and bathhouses.

Chichester Cathedral, showcasing a stunning mix of Norman and Gothic architectural styles, stands noticeably in the southwest corner of the city's wall. Mostly abandoned by the 380s, it was re-established as a key strategic location by William the Conqueror during the Norman invasion in 1066. Unique amongst England’s medieval cathedrals, it is home to a free standing medieval bell tower and double aisles, as well as beautiful stained glass, tapestries, sculptures and astonishing mosaics which pay tribute to its Roman past.

The Novium Museum houses diverse artefacts with geological, archaeological and socio-historical significance. Situated atop a Roman bathhouse complex, the site's notable exhibitions include the Jupiter Stone and the Chilgrove Mosaic. Dated between the late 1st century CE and the late 3rd century CE, the Jupiter Stone is likely a fragment of column or pedestal which would once have supported the Roman god Jupiter. Dating from the 4th century CE, the Chilgrove Mosaic is designed in vivid colours and a symmetrical pattern; its more simplistic design is often accredited to a school of mosaicists known to practise at dedicated workshops along the south of Britain.

Visits in Pevensey further emphasise the region's significance as a central fortification throughout history. By 290 CE, the site had become the biggest Roman Saxon Shore Fortress (late Roman Empire fortifications located on the English Channel) and was only one of nine situated on the British side. Known as Anderitum, it is believed to have served as the base for the Roman fleet Classis Anderidaensis. The site also showcases Norman history: William the Conqueror landed here and constructed a Norman fortress atop the Roman defenses.

Further Roman remains can be found at Fishbourne Roman Palace & Gardens and Bignor Roman Villa. Fishbourne, the largest Roman residence north of the Alps, was constructed around 75 CE and includes a rectangular palace with formal gardens. Inside, there are impressive mosaics, a hypocaust, baths and four residential wings. Meanwhile at Bignor, we will view some of the most complete and intricate mosaic floors in the country.

To experience a dimension of living archaeology, we also hope to visit to Bridge Farm near Lewes. Managed by the Culver Archaeological Project, this superb site hosts ongoing excavations supported by local communities, schools, patrons and archaeologists. Numerous artefacts, such as foundation structures and pottery, have been unearthed, dating the site from the mid-to-late 1st century CE to the early 5th century.

We will stay throughout at The Millstream Hotel. Nestled in Bosham, a historic village on the shores of Chichester Harbour, this hotel has been elegantly converted from 17th century workmen’s cottages to offer a combination character, charm and comfort.

This tour will be led by expert in ancient history, Jamie Sewell, PhD. Jamie has many years’ experience supervising excavations across Europe, including in Italy, and he has authored a book and many articles on the archaeology of towns in Hellenistic Italy and the broader Mediterranean. His ongoing research is focused on how and why larger settlements in Italy transformed as a result of the Roman conquest of the peninsula. Jamie has lectured at Durham University and Humboldt University in Berlin, and has more than a decade’s experience working as a historical guide.
