Since 1634, the inhabitants of the Bavarian village of Oberammergau have staged Christ’s Passion once every ten years. In so doing, they have fulfilled the promise they made nearly 400 years ago in gratitude for surviving the plague. This unique event, of theological, historical and theatrical significance, is an eagerly anticipated spectacle, and the Play will be at the heart of our special tour.

Oberammergau’s first-ever Passion Play was staged in the cemetery above the graves of recent plague victims; then, as now, only those born or bred in the village were entitled to take part in the performances. As well as witnessing the riveting Biblical story unfold in the Passion Play Theatre, we will explore the history of Oberammergau and immerse ourselves in the sights and sounds of the local area, providing a rich and unforgettable cultural experience.

Our itinerary will include excursions to Ludwig II’s Neuschwanstein Castle, Hohenschwangau Castle and Linderhof Palace. The latter is home to Hunding’s Hut, modelled on a dwelling from Wagner’s Ring Cycle. We will also visit the Geingenbau Museum of violin-making, and enjoy a tour and piano recital given by our Tour Director John Bryden at the Richard Strauss Institute in the spa town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Our tour will begin and end in the medieval town of Füssen, situated in the foothills of the Alps, where we will spend a total of four nights at the four-star Hotel Schlosskrone. Embedded within our tour will be a two-night stay at a four-star hotel close to Oberammergau, to be confirmed nearer the time.

This tour will be led by John Bryden, MA, ARCM, ARCO and Andrew Spira, MA. A long-standing ACE Tour Director, John is an international concert pianist and organist who has previously taken ACE travellers to explore the sights of Bavaria. Andrew is an art historian who has led cultural tours across Europe for 20 years, in addition to working at Christie’s Education and as a curator at the Victoria & Albert Museum.
