Overview

Since its inception, the Mozart Festival has developed into the world’s most important stage for Mozart’s music, with great conductors, renowned orchestras and celebrated soloists shaping the festival’s profile. The focus is and always has been on Mozart’s work – pure, unadulterated and with the ambition to rediscover it again and again.
The 2027 festival will take as its theme Mozart and ‘Mozarts’, considering and comparing the composer’s work with that of others he inspired or influenced, such as, for instance, Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga, known to some as the 'Spanish Mozart’. In the words of the festival’s Artistic Director Rolando Villazón, “We would like to make you more familiar with some of these composers, and feature their works alongside the fixed star Mozart in our varied programme”.
We look forward to hearing a specially chosen selection of Mozart’s music in Salzburg’s glorious surroundings. Among the planned highlights of the 2027 festival programme will be performances by the Vienna Philharmonic, Potsdam Chamber Academy and Basel Chamber Orchestra. The latter will bring us Mozart’s Violin Concerto No 3 in G and Serenade in C – the recently discovered ‘A Very Little Night Music’ – alongside works by Joseph Martin Kraus; while the Vienna Philharmonic and pianist Igor Levit will perform Mozart’s dramatic Piano Concert No 13 in C and ‘Haffner' Symphony under the baton of conductor Ádám Fischer.
We also look forward to a semi-staged performance of Così fan tutte, as well as an appearance from internationally-acclaimed string quartet Cuarteto Quiroga with Austrian violist Veronika Hagen. Our tour closes with an ode to Beethoven as the world commemorates the 200th anniversary of his death, in what promises to be a rousing performance of the composer’s Ninth Symphony, brought to us by the Vienna Philharmonic.
Woven into our tour will be several cultural experiences serving to augment our understanding of Mozart’s life and work and uncover Salzburg’s musical heritage. We will explore Mozart’s birthplace and his early home, the Wohnhaus, and also look forward to a privileged opportunity to view original manuscripts in the Mozarteum, guided by an archivist. Furthermore, our tour will include an excursion to the Kaiservilla, summer residence of Emperor Franz Joseph I, as well as walking tours of Salzburg and the Linzer Gasse.

Ashley Solomon
Ashley Solomon enjoys a successful career as a soloist, chamber musician and guest director worldwide.
Our Tour Director is Professor Ashley Solomon, FRCM, FRAM, Chair and Head of Historical Performance at the Royal College of Music and a Fellow of the Royal College of Music and the Royal Academy of Music. Ashley is the director of Florilegium, the Baroque ensemble he co-founded in 1991, and has made close to 40 recordings with them, many of which have garnered international awards. Since 2014, Ashley has been working closely with the Royal Collection Trust to curate musical performances in their royal venues. He has led many tours for ACE across the globe.

Our Accommodation
We will stay at the four-star superior Hotel Imlauer Pitter Salzburg, ideally placed for exploring the main sites on our tour. The hotel is home to the superb Sky Bar & Restaurant, where we plan to enjoy some of our dinners.
Itinerary
Day 1
Depart London Gatwick 0930 on British Airways, arriving Salzburg 1225. Transfer to Hotel Imlauer Pitter, Salzburg for six nights. Afternoon orientation walk.
Day 2
Morning lecture followed by late morning festival performance at the Mozarteum (Grosser Saal) featuring Kammerorchester Basel, Kristian Bezuidenhout (piano & direction) & Alina Ibragimova (violin): Joseph Martin Kraus Overture from Olympie, Symphony in C minor; Mozart Violin Concerto in G, K 216, Serenade in C, K 648 ‘A Very Little Night Music’, orchestral version of Adagio in E for violin & orchestra, K 261. Afternoon: private visit to Mozarteum Autograph Vaults (rare manuscripts). Day 3
Free time with option to attend High Mass at the Cathedral, followed by visit to Mozart’s Wohnhaus (residence). Afternoon festival performance at Haus für Mozart: Mozart Così fan tutte (semi-staged). Evening lecture.
Day 4
Whole day excursion to the Salzkammergut area, including private visit to the Kaiservilla, summer residence of Emperor Franz Joseph I.
Day 5
Morning walking tour of Salzburg, including Mozart’s birthplace and cathedral. Afternoon festival performance at the Mozarteum (Grosser Saal) featuring Cuarteto Quiroga and Veronika Hagen (viola): Mozart String Quartet No 16 in E flat, K 428, String Quartet in C, K 515; Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga String Quartet No 3 in E flat. Fitness Requirements
The majority of ACE Cultural Tours are active in nature. To make the most of our time in a destination and provide excellent value for money, they are busy – there are often several visits included each day. As such, our tours require a certain minimum level of physical and mental fitness, mobility and stamina.
Many visits will involve navigating several steps, uneven ground, steep ascents and descents, and could involve embarking and disembarking aircraft, coaches, trains and cruise vessels. Plenty of walking, punctuated by lengthy periods of standing, is the norm. Some tours may involve long coach journeys.
It is essential that all customers are sufficiently fit and able enough to fully participate. Furthermore, every tour comprises a group of guests. We cannot allow the entire group to be negatively impacted by one participant, either holding up the pace we reasonably need to maintain or disproportionately requiring the attention and support of the tour staff.
We carefully consider the intensity, fitness and other requirements of each itinerary and describe them on the tour pages of our brochures and website. Please study these descriptions closely. When you call to book, we will reiterate those requirements and ask you to confirm that all group members are indeed fit enough and otherwise able to meet the criteria. It is your responsibility to answer fully and honestly. If it transpires that you are not able to keep pace with the tour and/or it reasonably appears you are negatively impacting (or are reasonably likely to negatively impact) the enjoyment of the rest of the group (including their ability to complete all scheduled visits), we may ask you to sit out certain days/visits, take a taxi at your own expense (if available in the location), or even, if we consider there is no other reasonable alternative, ask you to leave the tour and make your own way home.
This tour involves a significant amount of walking to our daytime visits and concert venues; this is mainly over flat ground, some of which is within the pedestrian zone of Salzburg. Please note that some walking is done in darkness and it is not always easy to arrange taxis as an alternative to walking back from concerts to the hotel. Some terrain is cobbled and the pavements in Salzburg require care to navigate. Participants should be aware of the likelihood of snow and ice at this time of the year. In particular, at the Kaiservilla, it is necessary to ascend a fairly steep, gravelled path to access the villa from the coach drop-off point, and this can be icy, so care is needed. This and the visit to Mozart’s birthplace also involve walking up and down steps – handrails are provided but there are no lifts. It is necessary to have a good overall level of fitness and mobility, and to meet the minimum fitness requirements as detailed in our Booking Terms & Conditions.
As a minimum, participants should be able to successfully complete the following self- assessment tests:
- Walk for one hour at a reasonable pace and without needing to take a break to rest
- Climb at least two flights of stairs at a reasonable pace
- Stand unaided for at least 30 minutes
- Stand up and sit down ten times in one minute
- Carry or otherwise move your own luggage
