Itinerary

Day

1

Depart Heathrow 0850 on British Airways for Pisa, arriving 1205. Transfer to Lucca for four nights at Albergo Celide. Afternoon: walk along 16th century city walls, Palazzo Pfanner (18th century frescoes and beautiful garden), Basilica di San Frediano and Piazza dell’Anfiteatro. Welcome and introduction.

Day

2

Lucca: Romanesque Cathedral of San Martino (where Puccini played the organ; Tintoretto’s Last Supper) and museum, Church of San Giovanni, San Michele in Foro (Romanesque facade), Puccini Museum (birthplace of Puccini) and 17th century Palazzo Mansi. Evening opera in Torre del Lago: Tosca.

Day

3

Morning lecture followed by Museo Nazionale (housed in 15th century Villa Guinigi). Late afternoon visit to Villa Museo Puccini followed by evening opera in Torre del Lago: La bohème.

Day

4

Morning: excursion to gardens of Villa Reale di Marlia (Napoleon’s sister’s home) and Celle dei Puccini including Puccini family home museum (where Puccini spent his childhood summers). Lecture followed by evening opera in Torre del Lago: Turandot

5

Depart Pisa 1305, arriving Heathrow 1435
