“I could not fault this tour… A thoroughly enjoyable few days”

- ACE customer on a previous Bath Mozartfest tour

Each year music pilgrims flock to the beautiful Georgian city of Bath to enjoy a festival celebrating one of Europe’s favourite musical sons: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

The festival – which has garnered critical acclaim for its high calibre performers – showcases not only the music composed by Mozart but also that of composers for whom he provided inspiration. Performances take place in the stunning surroundings of Bath’s historical buildings, including the Guildhall and the delightful 18th century Assembly Rooms.

ACE is delighted to be offering two tours to the 2024 Mozartfest, which features an especially strong line-up of artists and offers an excellent range of performances. Our first departure takes in the festival’s opening concert of works for string quartet by Mozart, Dvorák and Tchaikovsky brought to us by the acclaimed Pavel Haas Quartet. This will be followed by a performance featuring cellist Alban Gerhardt and pianist Steven Osborne, including Robert Schumann’s Adagio and Allegro, and Brahms’s Cello Sonata in F.

Further highlights will include an evening with the London Mozart Players, the UK’s longest-established chamber orchestra, and pianist Angela Hewitt, who will bring us a programme of works by Mozart including his Piano Concertos No 8, 9 and 12; and a performance of works by Mozart, Britten and Beethoven given by the Nash Ensemble, founded by the Mozartfest’s Artistic Director Amelia Freedman.

We also look forward to hearing from prize-winning British-Ukrainian pianist Alexei Grynyuk, who will perform Mozart’s Fantasia in C minor and Sonata in F, alongside Mendelssohn’s Variation Serieuses in D minor and Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No 9, ‘Pest Carnival’, in the surroundings of the 18th century Guildhall. A further highlight will be an appearance from the Modigliani String Quartet.

Our tour will conclude with a concert featuring two esteemed British musicians: mezzo soprano Dame Sarah Connolly and pianist Dame Imogen Cooper. Whilst the programme for this concert is yet to be announced, this is sure to be a highlight of the 2024 festival, and a fine note on which to end our tour.

Alongside the musical programme, our itinerary will take in further cultural treats on offer in the city of Bath. We hope to include a visit to the Holburne Museum – home to Sir William Holburne’s collection of fine and decorative arts – with an illustrated lecture given by our Tour Director on the Schantz fortepiano (subject to final confirmation). We also look forward to a visit to the city’s iconic Roman Baths.

Complementing our time in Bath will be an excursion to Wells, England’s smallest city, to see its beautiful Gothic cathedral.

We will stay throughout at the four-star Francis Hotel, set within Georgian townhouses in the heart of Bath.

This tour will be led by Sandy Burnett, MA, a musician and broadcaster who spent over a decade as one of the best-known classical music presenters on BBC Radio 3. He has conducted many orchestras and choirs, and has masterminded a complete cycle of J S Bach’s sacred cantatas.

Please note that, owing to another commitment, Sandy Burnett will temporarily leave the tour in the early afternoon of November 12, having given a morning lecture introducing the evening concert featuring Dame Sarah Connolly and Dame Imogen Cooper. The group will be accompanied for the remainder of the day by an experienced ACE Tour Manager. Sandy will return on the final morning of the tour to give a summary and farewell talk.
