Fitness & Practicalities

The majority of ACE Cultural Tours are active in nature. To make the most of our time in a destination and provide excellent value for money, they are busy – there are often several visits included each day. As such, our tours require a certain minimum level of physical and mental fitness, mobility and stamina.

Many visits will involve navigating several steps, uneven ground, steep ascents and descents, and could involve embarking and disembarking aircraft, coaches, trains and cruise vessels. Plenty of walking, punctuated by lengthy periods of standing, is the norm. Some tours may involve long coach journeys.

It is essential that all customers are sufficiently fit and able enough to fully participate. Furthermore, every tour comprises a group of guests. We cannot allow the entire group to be negatively impacted by one participant, either holding up the pace we reasonably need to maintain or disproportionately requiring the attention and support of the tour staff.

We carefully consider the intensity, fitness and other requirements of each itinerary and describe them on the tour pages of our brochures and website. Please study these descriptions closely. When you call to book, we will reiterate those requirements and ask you to confirm that all group members are indeed fit enough and otherwise able to meet the criteria. It is your responsibility to answer fully and honestly. If it transpires that you are not able to keep pace with the tour and/or it reasonably appears you are negatively impacting (or are reasonably likely to negatively impact) the enjoyment of the rest of the group (including their ability to complete all scheduled visits), we may ask you to sit out certain days/visits, take a taxi at your own expense (if available in the location), or even, if we consider there is no other reasonable alternative, ask you to leave the tour and make your own way home.

Tour specific fitness information

Participants should meet ACE’s usual fitness requirements (please see our Booking Terms & Conditions for further details). This tour will involve some walking in the city centre and the terrain can sometimes be cobbled and hilly. Moreover, traffic in Bath can be heavy so care must be taken, particularly on narrow or uneven pavements. Some pavements suffer from exposed tree roots resulting in broken tarmac, and fallen, wet leaves can cause slippery surfaces. Participants should be prepared for navigating flights of stairs, including at the hotel, where there is no lift available, and at St Mary’s Bathwick, where accessing our seats for some of the performances involves climbing a stone spiral staircase of 25 steps (with a handrail). The steps to the Charterhouse at Wells Cathedral are worn in places and there is no handrail for the final third of the staircase, but this element of the visit is optional. Please also be prepared for some dimly lit interiors.

Minimum fitness requirements

As a minimum, participants should be able to successfully complete the following self- assessment tests:

• Walk for one hour at a reasonable pace and without needing to take a break to rest
• Climb at least two flights of stairs at a reasonable pace
• Stand unaided for at least 30 minutes
• Stand up and sit down ten times in one minute
• Carry or otherwise move your own luggage

Day 1

Check in from 1500 at The Bird, Bath, for five nights. Welcome and introduction to the festival. Evening festival performance at St Mary’s Bathwick featuring the Nash Ensemble: Mozart Quintet for piano and winds in E flat, K 452; Strauss Capriccio for string sextet, Op 85; Wagner ‘Träume’ (‘Dreams’) for cello and piano, WWV 91; Mozart String Quintet No 6 in E flat, K 614. Please note participants may also wish to attend an informal, late-night concert at St Mary’s with the Nash Ensemble (at own expense).

Day 2

Morning lecture followed by late morning festival performance at St Mary’s Bathwick featuring Anthony Marwood (violin) and Aleksandar Madžar (piano): Mozart Violin Sonata No 25 in F, K 377; Beethoven Violin Sonata No 5 in F, Op 24 'Spring'; Ravel Berceuse sur le nom de Gabriel Fauré; Prokofiev Violin Sonata No 2 in D, Op 94bis. Afternoon: optional visit to the Roman Baths or some free time. Evening festival performance at Bath Abbey featuring Bath Abbey Choir & Organist with the Nash Players and Huw Williams (conductor) – programme to be confirmed.

Day 3

Excursion to Wells for a visit to the Bishop’s Palace and Gardens (subject to events), guided tour of Wells Cathedral and some free time to explore the
city. Early evening festival performance at St Mary’s Bathwick featuring Lucy Parham (piano) and Dame Harriet Walter (actor): ‘I, Clara’ – The Life and Works of Clara Schumann.

 
Day 4

Morning visit to the Holburne Museum with a lecture by Sandy Burnett on site, followed by a tour of the art collections. Lunchtime festival performance at the Guildhall featuring Junyan Chen (piano): Mozart Piano Sonata No 11 in A, K 331; Unsuk Chin Etudes or Chick Corea Children’s Songs; Brahms Piano Sonata No 2 in F sharp minor, Op 2. Evening festival performance at St Mary's Bathwick featuring Leonkoro String Quartet: Beethoven String Quartet No 4 in C minor, Op 18; Shostakovich String Quartet No 8 in C minor, Op 110; Schubert String Quartet No 13 in A minor, Op 29, D 804 ‘Rosamunde’.

Day 5

Morning lecture followed by excursion to Bradford-upon-Avon for a short historical walking tour including tea and cake, followed by a festival performance at Wiltshire Music Centre featuring Hugo Svedberg (cello), Tim Horton (piano) and Adrian Brendel (cello): Handel Trio Sonata in G minor, HWV 393; Schubert Arpeggione Sonata in A minor, D 821; Rachmaninov Cello Sonata in G minor, Op 19. Evening festival performance at St Mary’s Bathwick featuring Paul Lewis (piano): Mozart Piano Sonata No 17 in B flat, K 570; Weber Piano Sonata No 2 in A flat, Op 39; Chopin Polonaise for piano No 1 in C sharp minor, Op 26, Nocturnes, Op 37; Mozart Piano Sonata No 13 in B flat, K 333 ‘Linz’.

Day 6

Tour disperses after breakfast at the hotel.
