“Tom is the most informative and entertaining guide we have had”

– ACE customer on a previous art tour in Berlin with Tom Abbott

Berlin is rightly famed for the wealth of its art collections and the vibrancy of its contemporary art scene. In 2025, ACE is delighted to present two complementary tours exploring the city in depth, the second of which will focus on Berlin’s modern and contemporary art, architecture and culture.

To set the scene, we will spend time delving into the memorable array of 19th century German painting and sculpture to be found at the Alte Nationalgalerie, paying particular attention to German Romantic and Expressionist works. The gallery is located on Berlin’s world-famous Museum Island, arguably the cultural heart of the city, where we will also spend time exploring other important museums independently.

Moving our focus onto the 20th century, we will enjoy a range of visits taking in the city’s fascinating 1920s art, design and architecture, from the iconic residential Hufeisensiedlung (Horseshoe Estate) to the collections of the Brohan Museum, home to decorative arts of the early 20th century.

Other highlights will include the Käthe Kollwitz Museum, featuring the world’s largest collection of works by the artist, including prints, drawings, sculptures and woodcuts; the Neue Nationalgalerie, part of the Kulturforum, where we will focus on art from 1945 to 1990; and the Museum of Decorative Arts, where we will learn about the pioneering Bauhaus School.

Auguststrasse is part of Berlin’s lively gallery district and home to its vibrant art scene, including the Kunstwerk Institute for Contemporary Art, while the Hamburger Bahnhof Museum of Contemporary Art contains works by the German performance artist Joseph Beuys. Our tour concludes with a visit to the Boros Foundation, a private collection of contemporary art displayed in a converted bunker in Berlin. The collection comprises works by international artists dating from 1990 to the present day.

In addition to the art collections, we will also explore the city’s architectural highlights during a tour taking in Potsdamer Platz, the Government Quarter around the Reichstag and the Alexanderplatz – including the Fernsehturm and the Stalinist architecture of former East Berlin.

This tour will be based at the comfortable three-star Martas Hotel Albrechtshof, conveniently situated within walking distance of Museum Island.

This tour will be led by Tom Abbott, BA, MA, an independent art and architectural historian who has lived in Berlin for over 20 years. A proficient lecturer and tour leader, he has extensive experience running tours in Germany for groups including the Arts Society as well as ACE. Tom’s expertise ranges from the Baroque and Rococo to German Romantic painting, landscape gardens and modern German history.

Complementary Tours

In 2025, ACE is pleased to present two complementary tours to Berlin, each led by art history expert and Berlin resident Tom Abbott, of which this is the second, focusing on modern and contemporary art and architecture. The first tour, which will run in April, will explore the historical art collections to be found in the city.
