Itinerary

Day

1

Tour assembles 1330 at the Grange Hotel, York, for four nights. Afternoon: Temple Newsam (Tudor/Jacobean mansion, formerly home of the Ingram family, with splendid collection of Georgian furniture). Evening lecture: Yorkshire Country Houses, an Introduction.

Day

2

Morning: Weston Hall, Otley (fine example of Yorkshire vernacular architecture with a Jacobean banqueting house in the grounds). Afternoon: curator-led tour of Cliffe Castle (Victorian ‘brass castle’ exuding the wealth and self-confidence of the period) and East Riddlesden Hall and gardens (17th century manor house with magnificent barns).

3

Morning: private tour of Hovingham Hall (Georgian house with riding school, seat of the Worsley family). Afternoon: private tour of Newburgh Priory (granted to the Bellasis family by Henry VIII and still their home) followed by St Michael’s Church, Coxwold where many of the family are buried with a fine series of monuments. Free evening.

4

Morning: Bedale Hall with its splendid Georgian plasterwork followed by St Gregory’s Church, Bedale with its fortified tower. Afternoon: private tour of Clifton Castle (Marquess of Downshire) followed by Constable Burton exterior and gardens (Palladian Villa completed in 1768, the home of the Wyvill family for whom it was built).

5

Morning: Lotherton Hall (Edwardian house formerly home of the Gascoigne family) for guided tour of house and chapel. Tour disperses 1500 at the hotel.
