Day

1

Depart Heathrow 0930 on Aer Lingus, arriving Cork 1050. Transfer to Bantry for five nights at The Maritime Hotel. Welcome from Festival Artistic Director Francis Humphrys. Festival opening concert with Quatuor Zaïde, Miranda Cuckson, Camille Thomas and Pacifica Quartet: Haydyn Quartet in B flat Op 50/1; Perkin Language for solo violin (world premiere); Ysaÿe Sonata for solo cello Op 28; Shostakovich Quartet No 11 in F minor Op 122.

Morning: Lecture: Before God and as an honest man: the string chamber music of Mozart. Coffee concert with Quatuor Zaïde: Haydyn Quartet in F major Op 50/5 The Dream; Mozart Quartet in E flat K 428. Afternoon: tour of Bantry House & Garden (Gobelins, Beauvais and Aubusson tapestries and terraced gardens). Afternoon concert with Tamsin Waley-Cohen and Huw Watkins: Respighi Violin Sonata in B minor; Elgar Violin Sonata in E minor. Evening concert with Miranda Cuckson, Viviane Hagner, Huw Watkins, Dana Zemtsov and Pacifica Quartet: Sciarrino Six Capricci for solo violin; Debussy Violin Sonata in G minor; Penderecki Cadenza; Shostakovich Quartet No 9 in E flat Op 117.

Morning: coffee concert with Pieter Wispelwey: Bach The Cello Suites. Short drive to Glengarriff. Afternoon: by ferry to Garnish Island for gardens of Ilnacullin (37 acres of woods, walled and Italian gardens). Evening concert with Quatuor Zaïde, Pacifica Quartet, Mairéad Hickey, Christopher Marwood and Huw Watkins: Shostakovich Quartet No 7 in F sharp Op 108; Shulamit Ran Glitter, doom, shards, memory (Irish premiere); Brahms Trio in B flat Op 8.

Morning lecture: String quartets: from Ravel’s time to our own. Coffee concert with Doric String Quartet: Mozart Quartet in B flat K 589; Britten Quartet No 3 Op 94. Afternoon concert with Quatuor Zaïde and Dana Zemtsov: Ravel Quartet in F major; Mozart String Quartet in C major K 515. Evening concert with Pieter Wispelwey, Alasdair Beatson, Pacifica Quartet, Johannes Moser, Doric String Quartet and Julius Drake: Brahms Cello Sonata in D major Op 78; Julia Wolfe String Quintet Splendid Hopes (Irish premiere); Elgar Piano Quintet in A minor Op 84.

Morning: half-day excursion through spectacular scenery of Ring of Beara and Healy Pass. Afternoon concert with Adam Walker, Alasdair Beatson and Pavel Haas Quartet: Prokofiev Flute Sonata in D major Op 94; Shostakovich Quartet No 2 in A major Op 68. Evening concert with Festival Strings, Peter Schumayer, Tamsin Waley-Cohen, Doric String Quartet, Camille Thomas and Julius Drake: Dove Ariel for unaccompanied soprano; Gál Concertino Op 52; Dennehy The weather of it (Irish premiere); Dvořák Piano Trio Op 65.

Morning festival talk: Evelyn Grant in conversation with Doric Quartet. Coffee concert with Adam Walker, Timothy Ridout, Andreja Malir, Olivier Doise, Camille Thomas, Alex Petcu, Kate Oswin, Lydia Abell and Ghislaine McMullin: Debussy Sonata for flute, viola and harp; Bruce The Consolation of Rain; Cras Quintet for harp, flute, violin, viola and cello (1928). Afternoon lecture followed by concert with Henning Kraggerud, Dénes Várjon and Claire Booth: Grieg Violin Sonata No 1 in F major Op 8; Grieg Haugtussa Song Cycle. Evening concert with Doric String Quartet, Viviane Hagner, Johannes Moser, Barry Douglas, Quatuor Zaïde and Alasdair Beatson: Adès Four Quarters; Beethoven Piano Trio No 1 in E flat Op 1/1; Fauré Piano Quintet in C minor Op 115.

7

Morning in Kinsale, a picturesque fishing village just south of Cork. Transfer to Cork for 1600 departure, arriving Heathrow 1700.
