Day
1
Depart Gatwick 0750 on British Airways, arriving Salzburg 1055. Transfer to Steyr for four nights at Hotel Minichmay.
Day
2
Morning walking tour of Steyr, including Town Parish Church (with neo-Gothic tower), Schloss Lamberg (lavish Baroque style), St Michael’s Church (pediment fresco, Rococo interior) followed by an excursion to the Baroque pilgrimage site of Christkindl (nativity scenes), former abbey church of Garsten (Baroque art collection), and St Florian (major Augustinian priory, art collection).

3
Drive to Linz, capital of Upper Austria: St Martin’s (Austria’s oldest surviving church), Linz Schloss (art collection), Old and New Cathedrals (largest Gothic church in Austria, 19th century) and the Baroque city centre. Afternoon: Visit Cistercian Abbey of Wilhering (chef d’oeuvre of Austrian Rococo), return to Steyr via Enns, Austria’s oldest city (Parish Church with Gothic Wallseer Chapel).

Whole day excursion to Mühlviertel (area north of the Danube): former Cistercian Abbey of Baumgartenberg (17th century frescoes and opulent Baroque interior), Schloss Clam (built 1149 by Otto von Machland, owner of Upper Austria), former Augustinian Priory of Waldhausen (major early Baroque architecture and decoration); on to Kefermarkt (late-Gothic winged altarpiece) and Freistadt (main square, parish church).

Depart Steyr for Kremsmünster (largest Benedictine abbey in Austria: Mathematical Tower, Baroque sh ponds, art collections). Continue to Schlierbach for a visit to the Baroque Abbey church. Lambach (major Romanesque scheme of wall- paintings) and Stadl-Paura (Baroque pilgrimage church of the Holy Trinity). Transfer to St Wolfgang for three nights.

6
Whole day exploring the lakeside town of St Wolfgang (famous winged altarpiece), the former Benedictine Abbey of Mondsee (Gothic church, Baroque sculpture), and Attersee (picturesque lakeside community with Baroque pilgrimage church).
Day
7
Excursion to Bad Ischl including the summer residence of Habsburg Emperors (Kaiservilla). Continue to Hallstatt (centre of pre-historic Alpine Hallstatt culture): parish church with ossuary, Natural History Museum, Hallstatt-period cemetery and oldest salt mine in the world.

Depart Salzburg 1145, arriving Gatwick 1245.
