Itinerary

Day

1

Tour assembles 1300 at The Angel Hotel, Abergavenny, for four nights. Afternoon visits to Caerwent Roman Town and Caerleon fortress. Evening introductory lecture: Borderland – Building a Picture of History.

2

Castles of the March: Longtown Castle (ruined Norman motte-and-bailey), White Castle (best preserved of the ‘Three Castles’), Goodrich Castle, Monmouth (town walls and defences), Raglan Castle. Evening talk.

Churches of the March: St Islow’s, Patrishow (exquisite carved rood screen of Irish oak); St Margaret’s, Newton St Margaret’s (rood screen dating from 1520); Dore Abbey; St Mary & St David, Kilpeck (elaborate stone carvings); St Aeddan’s, Bettws Newydd (complete rood arrangement); St Mary’s, Llanfair Kilgeddin (rich decorative sgraffito scheme); Priory Church of St Mary, Abergavenny. Evening talk.

4

Whole day excursion departing from Ross-on-Wye to Chepstow following the 18th century tourist route: Symonds Yat Rock (viewpoint and hillfort), the Kymin, Tintern Abbey, Eagle’s Nest viewpoint at Wyndcliffe, Chepstow Castle. Evening talk.

Day

5

Morning visit to UNESCO World Heritage site of Blaenavon. Tour disperses 1300 at hotel.
