Itinerary

Day

1

Depart Heathrow 0835 on British Airways, arriving Bilbao 1130. Transfer for overnight stay at Parador de Santillana Gil Blas. Visit to the Colegiata (Romanesque church). Introductory lecture.

Day

2

Morning: Santuario de Covadonga (shrine, cave, museum and chapel). Afternoon at Roman Villa of Veranes in Gijón and church of San Salvador de Valdediós. Transfer to Oviedo for two nights at Gran Hotel España.

Day

3

Oviedo: Gothic cathedral including Cámara Santa (treasury), Romanesque church of San Tirso, Archaeological and Fine Art museums and pre-Romanesque churches including San Julián de los Prados (wall paintings), Santa María del Naranco and San Miguel de Lillo. Evening lecture: Pre-Romanesque Architecture in Asturias. Free evening.

Day

4

Morning: Santa Cristina de Lena and Santo Adriano de Tuñón. Journey along the Camino Primitivo pilgrimage route to Salas for visit to San Salvador de Cornella. Continue to Tineo for overnight stay at Hotel Palacio de Meras. Evening lecture: Camino Primitivo.

Day

5

Continue along pilgrimage route via Santa María la Real de Obona and Santa Eulalia de Bóveda to Lugo, Galicia. Overnight stay at Hotel Méndez Núñez.

Day

6

Morning: Lugo 12th century cathedral, Roman walls, museum and Casa de los Mosaicos. Continue to Santiago de Compostela via Palas del Rei, O Leboreiro and Arzúa. Transfer to San Francisco Hotel Monumento for two nights. Evening lecture: Romanesque for the Pilgrims.

7

Santiago de Compostela: cathedral, Archbishop’s Palace (museum), and Santa María de Sar. Free afternoon and evening.

Day

8

Depart for A Coruña airport via Torre de Hercules (Roman lighthouse), Romanesque Santa María de Cambre. Church of Santiago and Santa María del Campo. Depart A Coruña 1820 on Iberia, arriving Heathrow 1915.
