Itinerary

Day

1

Depart Heathrow 0930 on British Airways, arriving Zurich 1220. Transfer to Hotel Kreuz, Mellau, for seven nights. Orientation walking tour upon arrival. Evening: welcome drink and introductory talk.

Day

2

Excursion to Hohenems (Jewish Museum). Afternoon festival concert featuring Baiba Skride (violin), Sol Gabetta (violoncello) and Nelson Goerner (piano): Schubert Violin Sonata in A D574 and Piano Trio in E flat D929; Chopin Cello Sonata in G minor Op 65. Evening festival concert featuring René Pape (bass) in his Schubertiade debut, and Camillo Radicke (piano): works by Schubert and Strauss (programme TBC).

3

Morning lecture followed by excursion to Schwarzenberg (Heimathaus, museum and village church). Afternoon festival concert featuring Khatia Buniatishvili (piano): Schubert (programme TBC).

4

Morning lecture followed by optional gentle alpine walk. Independent lunch followed by afternoon festival concert featuring Christian Zacharias (piano): Schubert Sonata in A minor D537, Walzes and Ländler; Ravel Valses nobles et sentimental; Schumann Davidsbündlertänze Op 6. Evening: Schubert piano dinner-recital by Tour Director.

5

Morning visit to Rieger Organ workshop followed by Egg (spectacular views across the Vorarlberg mountains). Afternoon festival concert featuring the Emerson String Quartet: Beethoven The Late String Quartets I: String Quartet in E flat Op 127, String Quartet in F Op 135, String Quartet in C sharp minor Op 131. Evening festival concert featuring Igor Levit (piano): Schubert Sonata in A D959 and Sonata in B flat D960.

6

Whole-day excursion to north shore of Lake Constance: picturesque Swabian towns of Lindau (old harbour, lighthouse, 15th century Rathaus) and Birnau (famous Rococo pilgrimage church with sculpture by Peter Thumb). Evening festival concert featuring Violeta Urmana (mezzo soprano) and Helmut German (piano): Schubert, Mahler and Strauss selection.

7

Morning organ recital in Mellau Church. Independent lunch and free afternoon. Evening festival concert featuring the Emerson String Quartet: Beethoven The Late String Quartets II: String Quartet in A minor Op 132, String Quartet in B flat Op 130 (with Grande Fugue Op 133 as finale).

8

Transfer via the Museum Oskar Reinhart in Winterthur for return flight departing Zurich 1825, arriving Heathrow 1910.
