Itinerary

Day

1

Depart Gatwick 0925 on Air Baltic, arriving Riga 1410. Transfer to Astor Riga Hotel for five nights. Welcome drink and introduction.

Day

2

Morning lecture followed by guided walk around the old town: St Peter’s Church, St John’s Church, Town Hall Square and House of the Blackheads (exterior), Cathedral, Museum of the Occupation of Latvia. Festival opera: Gounod’s Faust.

Day

3

Morning lecture followed by guided tour of the Latvian National Opera House (passing the Wagner Concert Hall en route). Afternoon: Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation (one of the oldest museums in Europe), Freedom Monument. Festival opera: Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin.

Day

4

Morning lecture followed by visit to Latvian Ethnographic Open Air Museum. Return to Riga for guided walk to Alberta Street (beautiful Art Nouveau buildings) and Art Nouveau Museum. Festival opera: Wagner’s Tannhäuser.

Day

5

Whole-day excursion to Rundle Palace (magnificent Baroque palace and gardens) including lunch at the Palace restaurant. Festival opera: Bizet’s Carmen.

Depart Riga 1555 arriving Gatwick 1645.
