Itinerary

Day

1

Tour assembles 1700 at Kingsmills Hotel, Inverness, for six nights. Welcome drink and introductory lecture.

Day

2

Tarbat Discovery Centre at Portmahomack for introduction to Picts and Pictish stones, Hilton of Cadboll stone, Shandwick stone, Nigg stone. Passenger ferry to Cromarty (early 19th century vernacular architecture, Hugh Miller’s cottage). Continue to Groam House Museum and Fortrose Cathedral.

Day

3

Clava cairns (Bronze Age ritual centre) and Culloden Moor (scene of the last battle on British soil), Brodie Castle (Pictish stone in grounds), Sueno’s Stone. Evening lecture: The Picts.

Day

4

Carn Liath broch, Dunrobin Castle (Pictish stone collection and tour of castle), Edderton Pictish stone, Glenmorangie distillery and Eagle Pictish stone at Strathpeffer.

Day

5

Morning: Urquhart Castle, Corrimony chambered cairn. Return to Inverness for afternoon visit to Inverness Museum (Pictish collection) and optional climb to Craig Phadrig hillfort (approx 2 miles). Evening lecture: Pictish Art.

Day

6

Burghead (remains of Pictish promontory fort and early Christian well), Elgin (Pictish stone in Cathedral and museum with Roman coin hoard), Duffus Castle and Fort George (built after the Jacobite rebellions to subdue the Highlands).
