Itinerary

Day

1

Depart Heathrow 0920 on British Airways for St Petersburg, arriving 1535. Overnight in St Petersburg.

Day

2

By hydrofoil to island of Valaam on Lake Ladoga: Valaam Monastery (14th century stauropegic Orthodox monastery famous for the Valaam male choir) and smaller convents. Transfer by boat to Sortavala for overnight stay.

Day

3

Travel through picturesque Karelia lowland via 250-year-old Kinerma Village. Continue to Petrozavodsk (capital of Karelia) for three nights.

Day

4

Whole-day excursion by boat to Kizhi Pogost on Lake Onega: UNESCO-listed masterpieces of 18th century wooden architecture including The Transfiguration Church (topped with 22 wooden domes).

Day

5

Petrozavodsk (founded by Peter the Great): the Republic of Karelia Fine Arts Museum (fine collection of 17th and 18th century icons) and National Museum, and a selection of town churches.

Day

6

Via Kondopoga (impressive 18th century wooden Church of the Dormition) to Kemj for overnight stay.

Day

7

Transfer by boat to Solovetsky Islands (Solovki) for three nights. Afternoon: first visit to Solovetsky Monastery (UNESCO World Heritage site and location of fervent monastic activity since 15th century) and museum.

Day

8

Boat trip to Zayatskij Island (tundra vegetation, prehistoric labyrinths) followed by optional visit to Sekirnaya Gora (former concentration camp).

Day

9

Excursion by rowing boat on monk-made canals and lakes with visit to botanical garden. Second visit to Solovetsky Monastery and museum.

Day

10

Some free time. Depart by air for two nights in Archangel. Orientation tour including port area of Solombala.

Day

11

Whole day excursion to Antonievo-Siiskii Monastery, Kholmogory (16th century centre for English merchants) and churches at Zaostrovje.

Day

12

Morning in Archangel centre: restored merchant houses, museums and city churches. Excursion to Museum of Wooden Architecture at Malye Karely (farmsteads, houses, windmills). Depart for St Petersburg by air for overnight stay.

Day

13

Lower Park at Peterhof. Depart St Petersburg 1655, arriving Heathrow 1730.
