Itinerary

Day

1

Assemble 1500 at Abode Glasgow Hotel, for six nights. Afternoon orientation walk with tea at the Willow Tea Rooms (designed by Mackintosh) followed by St Vincent Street Church. Evening lecture: Glasgow’s History in Architecture.

Day

2

Riverside Museum (exhibits of late 19th and 20th century industrial and social history, in a striking building designed by Zaha Hadid), Tenement House, St Andrew’s in the Square (splendid restored plasterwork), Mackintosh Queen’s Cross (Mackintosh’s only church). Evening lecture: Glasgow Artists: from Mackintosh and the Glasgow Boys to the Turner Prize.

Day

3

Dumfries House (18th century house with unrivalled collection of Chippendale furniture) for visit and lunch, Culzean House (historic home of the Kennedy family with Adam and Adam Revival interiors, in a spectacular cli top setting). Free evening.

Day

4

Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, Kelvingrove Park (designed by Sir Joseph Paxton) and Museum (focus on the Glasgow Style).

Day

5

Whole day excursion to the Isle of Bute for Mount Stuart.

Day

6

Pollok House (impressive collection of Spanish art), House for an Art Lover (designed by Mackintosh as an international competition entry for an imaginary patron), Holmwood House.

Day

7

Morning visit to the Hill House (Mackintosh’s nest domestic work). Tour disperses 1245 at the hotel.
