Itinerary

Day

1

Tour assembles 1200 at Peterborough train station. Visits to Grimsthorpe Castle (magnificent north range by Vanbrugh) and The Summer House, Swinstead (likewise by Vanbrugh). Continue to Stamford for three nights at The George of Stamford. Welcome drink.

Day

2

Morning visit to Boughton House, whose medieval and Tudor core was transformed into a French-style Baroque palace. Afternoon: the spectacular exterior of Burley-on-the-Hill, with its vast forecourt, and Exton Church (excellent collection of funerary monuments). Free evening.

Day

3

Morning: Lowick Church (fine medieval and Baroque monuments) followed by a private tour of Drayton House (remodelled by John Webb and then William Talman and retaining outstanding contents). Afternoon: Stoke Doyle Church followed by Kimbolton Castle (rebuilt in the late 17th and early 18th centuries with contributions from Henry Bell, Vanbrugh and Thomas Archer, together with frescoes by Antonio Pellegrini).

Day

4

St Martin’s Church, Stamford (vast Baroque monument to the Earl of Exeter) followed by Elizabethan Burghley House (remodelled internally in the Baroque period with spectacular frescoes by Verrio and superb contents). Tour disperses 1515 at Peterborough train station.
