Itinerary

Day

1

Depart London Heathrow 1350 on Aer Lingus, arriving Cork 1510. Transfer to Dingle Skellig Hotel for three nights.

Day

2

Cruise around Great Blasket Island or optional free time in Dingle, followed by Ballynavenooragh stone fort and Brandon Creek (traditional departure of St Brendan the Navigator), accompanied by local archaeologist Isabel Bennett.

Day

3

Dingle Peninsula via Slea Head: Dunbeg (medieval promontory fort) and Glenfahan clocháns (beehive huts), Blasket Centre (heritage centre about life on Blasket Islands), Ballyferriter for West Kerry Museum (local antiquities) and Reask (early medieval monastery).

4

Transfer to Killarney via Kilmalkeadar (Romanesque church, alphabet stone, ancient sundial and ogham stone), Gallarus (early medieval oratory with decorated stone and ‘saint’s bed’) and Ardfert (complex of churches including a 12th-13th century cathedral). Four nights at Loch Lein Country House Hotel.

Morning in Killarney: Ross Island (one of the oldest copper mines in Europe), Ross Castle (15th century castle, beautifully situated on Lough Leane) and Lough Leane by waterbus. Afternoon: Aghadoe Romanesque church, Beaufort (ogham stones), Kate Kearney’s cottage by Gap of Dunloe.

Iveragh Peninsula, the ‘Ring of Kerry’: Leacanabuaile (medieval stone fort), Cahergal (stone fort), Eichtercua (impressive prehistoric standing stones in a spectacular location), Caherdaniel (Derrynane House, charming home and garden of Daniel O’Connell).

7

Killarney: Muckross Friary (15th century Franciscan friary), Muckross House and Gardens (imposing 19th century manor overlooking lake), Dundag Boathouse.

Day

8

Ballyvourney, County Cork (pilgrimage site dedicated to St Gobnait). Depart Cork 1600, arriving London Heathrow 1720.
