Itinerary

Day

1

Tour assembles 1300 at Guildford railway station. Visit to Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village (home to Victorian painter and sculptor G F Watts) for G F Watts Bicentenary exhibition and guided tour of Limnerslease House. Transfer to Pelham House Hotel, Lewes for three nights. Introductory lecture: Arts and Crafts Architecture and Design.

Day

2

Morning: walking tour of Lewes including Southover Grange and Castle gateway. Excursion to Monk’s House (18th century cottage that was home to Leonard and Virginia Woolf), St Peter’s Church in Firle (John Piper stained glass), Berwick Church (Bloomsbury set murals) and Charleston (house and garden of Bloomsbury Group members Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant). Evening lecture: Modernism and Bloomsbury.

Day

3

Morning: guided tour of Farley Farm House (home of Surrealist photographer Lee Miller and artist Roland Penrose). Afternoon visit to Standen (Arts and Crafts house with Morris & Co interiors). Evening lecture: Ravilious and the English Romantic Tradition.

Day

4

Morning excursion to Towner Art Gallery in Eastbourne for the exhibition Eric Ravilious & Co: The Pattern of Friendship. Tour disperses at Lewes railway station 1300 followed by hotel.
