Itinerary

Day

1

Depart Heathrow 0925 on British Airways, arriving St Petersburg 1545. Transfer to Hotel Angleterre for seven nights.

Day

2

Morning lecture followed by orientation tour (St Nicholas’s Cathedral, Strelka, Peter and Paul Fortress and Nevsky Prospekt). Afternoon: Kazan Cathedral (exterior only) and Fabergé Musuem.

Day

3

Morning lecture followed by State Russian Museum (world-class collection of art housed in Mikhailovsky Palace). Afternoon: Nevsky Prospekt, Log Cabin of Peter the Great and Depository of the State Hermitage Collection. Free evening.

Day

4

Morning lecture followed by first visit to Hermitage: Gold Room, Italian paintings from Simone Martini to Bernardo Bellotto.

Day

5

Whole day second visit to the Hermitage: Dutch and Flemish paintings from Robert Campin to Rembrandt and the Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, Picasso and Matisse collections in the General Staff Headquarters. Free evening.

Day

6

Whole day excursion to two of the summer palaces: Catherine’s Palace and Pavlovsk (with its English Park). Return to St Petersburg via Chesma Church. Free evening.

Day

7

Alexander Nevsky Monastery and Tikhvin Cemetery (tombs of Russian writers and composers including Dostoyevsky, Borodin, Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov) followed by Menshikov Palace and Yusupov Palace.

Day

8

Morning: presidential palace Konstantinovsky at Strelna. Depart St Petersburg 1645, arriving Heathrow 1725.
