Morning: Königsplatz (19th century neoclassical architecture) and the Alte Pinakothek (14th – 18th century art collections). Afternoon visit to the Pinakothek der Moderne (one of the world’s largest collections of modern and contemporary art). Evening lecture.
Whole day excursion north of Munich, including Schleissheim Palace (former royal summer residence of the Bavarian monarchs, with one of the most important Baroque gardens in Europe) and Freising Cathedral.
Morning: Lenbachhaus (Munich artists and contemporary works) followed by the Bavarian National Museum (superlative collection of decorative arts). Afternoon: Schack Gallery (fascinating collection of 19th century German paintings). Evening lecture.
Whole day excursion south of Munich including the Benedictine Monastery of Andechs (dazzling Rococo interiors; burial place of Carl Orff), the UNESCO-listed Wieskirche, and Linderhof Palace (built by Ludwig II of Bavaria and probably inspired by Versailles).
Morning visit to Nymphenburg Palace including coach and porcelain museums (time permitting). Depart Munich 1625, arriving Heathrow 1725.
