Itinerary

Day

1

Depart Gatwick 1145 on Easyjet, arriving Catania 1545. Transfer to Palermo for three nights at Centrale Palace Hotel. Evening: introductory lecture.

Day

2

Morning visits on foot: church of La Martorana, Palermo Cathedral, Palazzo dei Normanni (Palatine Chapel, Punic defences). Afternoon: Monreale Cathedral (including cloister).

Day

3

Morning visits in Palermo: Oratorio del Rosario di Santa Cita, National Archaeological Museum. Afternoon excursion to the ancient site of Solunto, followed by the 18th-century Villa Palagonia in Bagheria.

Day

4

Morning: Segesta, including temple and theatre. Continue to Marinella for visit to Selinunte. Transfer to Agrigento for two nights at Colleverde Park Hotel.

Day

5

Full day exploration of Agrigento, starting with the Temple Ridge and ending with the Archaeological Museum and its surroundings.

Day

6

Transfer by coach to Piazza Armerina for Villa del Casale (famous for its remarkable mosaic floors depicting hunting scenes, mythological characters and sporting events) and Morgantina archaeological site. Continue to Syracuse for four nights at the Grand Hotel Ortigia.

Day

7

Syracuse: Temple of Apollo, Museo Archaeologico Paolo Orsi, Catacombs of San Giovanni, Archaeological Park. Early evening walking tour of Ortygia including sacred spring of Arethusa and Piazza Duomo (Temple of Athena).

Day

8

Excursion to new Baroque town of Noto (built after 1693 earthquake). Afternoon: Villa del Tellaro (4th century with fine mosaics) return via Castello Eurialo. Free evening with optional visit to Sicilian puppet theatre.

Day

9

Whole-day excursion by coach to ancient Naxos (early Greek colony) and Taormina (Greco-Roman theatre).

Day

10

Transfer to Catania for optional exploration; depart Catania airport 1620, arriving Gatwick 1835.
