Yoko Kawaguchi

Biography

Yoko Kawaguchi is a cultural historian specialising in the relationship between Japan and the west. Brought up in the US, Canada and Japan, she holds an MA from Kyoto University and has undertaken postgraduate research at Newnham College, Cambridge. She lectures on Japanese garden history, art, architecture and religion, and other aspects of Japanese culture, their reception in the west, as well as on western perception of Japanese women. She leads tours to Japan and her publications include Butterfly's Sisters: The Geisha in Western Culture for Yale University Press, Japanese Zen Gardens, and Authentic Japanese Gardens. She lives in the UK.
