Ellen Jones

Biography

An expert in ancient civilisations of the Mediterranean, Ellen studied Egyptology at the University of Oxford as an undergraduate through to the award of her DPhil, which explored the relationship between gender, self-presentation and religious decorum in ancient Egyptian elite tombs from the New Kingdom. Ellen then worked as a Classics teacher, focusing on classical languages, Roman daily life, and ancient Greek religion, a position she has held for the last four years. 

As a trained archaeologist specialising in digital epigraphy and photography, she is a member of two archaeological missions to Egypt, working on graffiti at Karnak Temple and funerary iconography at the necropolis at El-Kab. Her fieldwork has been published in the public journal series Egyptian Archaeology and Nekhen News. 

Alongside her research work, Ellen is passionate about academic outreach, including designing a public workshop for the Ashmolean Museum and lecturing at the Egypt Exploration Society. She worked as an Egyptological consultant for Kate Daudy’s modern art exhibition, part of the Saatchi Gallery’s Tutankhamun: Treasures of a Golden Pharaoh exhibition.

As a frequent traveller to Egypt, Italy and Greece, Ellen is looking forward to sharing the rich histories of these countries and how these ancient cultures have influenced the world we live in today.
