Martin is one of Britain's most prolific travel journalists. Over a career spanning more than 20 years his work has won numerous awards across the English-speaking world. Martin’s wanderlust and insatiable curiosity takes him to all climes in search of original stories. To date he has visited more than 100 countries on assignments for national newspapers and travel magazines but has retained a particular fascination with the east and has journeyed to Burma several times since the tourism boycott.
Born and brought up in Oporto, Martin is the author of the Dorling Kindersley guidebook to Portugal and the AA Essential Guide to Portugal. A former Travel Writer of the Year, Martin regularly lectures on the art and craft of travel writing as well as tutoring adult education groups at the University of Bath.
His recent travel book entitled Sacred Britain (published 2011) explores ‘sacredness’ - sacred sites and pilgrimage routes from pre-historic times to the present. Martin also continues his journalistic work, including regular contributions to The Times, the Daily Mail and Wanderlust.
