Itinerary

Day

1

Depart Heathrow 0850 on British Airways, arriving Pisa 1200. Visit to Camposanto, Bapistery and Duomo before transferring to Florence for six nights at Hotel Rivoli. Introductory lecture.

Day

2

Walking tour of Florence including exterior of Duomo and Palazzo Vecchio. Visit to Uffizi Gallery (Botticelli Madonna of the Magnificat). Afternoon: Santa Croce (Giotto frescoes and memorials to Dante and Michelangelo). Evening lecture: The Pre-Raphaelites and the Early Renaissance.

3

Whole-day excursion to Siena: Duomo, Museo dell’Opera della Metropolitana, Palazzo Pubblico (works by Duccio, Simone Martini, Lorenzetti and Pinturicchio). Evening lecture: The Victorian Love Affair with Tuscany.

Day

4

Morning in Oltrarno quarter of Florence: Santa Maria del Carmine (Masaccio), Bellosguardo (home to Spencer Stanhope from 1872). Afternoon: San Marco (Fra Angelico), Santa Maria Novella (Masaccio and Filippino Lippi) and English Cemetery (grave of Elizabeth Barrett Browning and other British residents of Florence).

Day

5

Morning in San Gimignano: Cathedral (Ghirlandaio) and Sant’Agostino (Gozzoli). Return to Florence via Chianti and the Abbey Church at Badia a Passignano (Ghirlandaio). Evening lecture: Botticelli and Piero della Francesca: a Victorian Revival.

6

Excursion to Arezzo for House of Vasari (ceiling frescoes by Vasari) and San Francesco (frescoes by Piero della Francesca).

Day

7

Transfer to Pisa for 1305 departure, arriving Heathrow 1430.
