Itinerary

Day

1

Depart Heathrow 1125 on Air Malta, arriving Malta 1535. Transfer to Grand Hotel Excelsior for six nights. Welcome talk followed by festival performance with Ensemble Correspondances: Charpentier Te Deum.

Day

2

Morning lecture followed by orientation walking tour of Valletta. Afternoon: National Museum of Fine Arts (Italian paintings including important works by Mattia Preti and followers of Caravaggio). Evening festival performance with the Dunedin Consort: Cantatas for the Soul.

Day

3

Morning: Domus Romana Museum (mosaics) and St Paul’s Catacombs. Free time to explore Sunday market in Marsaxlokk. Evening festival performance with the Centre Musique Baroque de Versailles: Jean-Baptiste Lully Atys (Parody with Puppets).

Day

4

Whole-day ferry excursion to island of Gozo: prehistoric temple of Ggantija, Victoria (walled citadel) with St George’s Basilica (scaled down copy of Bernini’s Baldacchino), Dwejra Bay (Fungus Rock of the Knights).

5

Morning excursion to Mdina for Cathedral and Cathedral Museum. Afternoon in Vittoriosa, the City of the Knights: Inquisitor’s Palace, Malta Maritime Museum, and Birgu fortifications. Evening festival performance with Associazione Musicale Giacomo Carissimi: Pergolesi La serva padrona.

6

Morning lecture followed by festival performance with Reiko Ichise: C F Abel (1723–1787) Pieces for Viola da Gamba. Visits to Co-Cathedral of St John (important masterpieces by Mattia Preti and Caravaggio), St John’s Cathedral Museum, and special guided tour of the National Library Reading Room. Evening festival performance with Vivica Genaux (mezzo soprano), Simone Kermes (soprano) and Cappella Gabetta: The Rival Queens.

Morning lecture. Depart Malta 1655, arriving Heathrow 1925.
