Itinerary

Day

1

Tour assembles 0830 at London Waterloo for departure by coach to Folkestone, for Eurotunnel Calais. Visit Auchy-les-Mines (Battle of Loos, Robert Graves), St Mary’s ADS Cemetery (Rudyard Kipling) and Hulluch (Charles Sorley). Continue to Najeti Hôtel de l’Univers, Arras, for four nights.

Day

2

Morning: Louvencourt Cemetery and Allied Front Line (Robert Graves, Siegfried Sassoon). Lunch at the Old Blighty Tearoom, La Boiselle. Afternoon: southern sector of the Somme (Siegfried Sassoon, Robert Graves, David Jones). Evening lecture: The Battle of the Somme.

Day

3

Morning: northern sector of the Somme battlefield including Ulster Tower and Ancre Cemetery (Edmund Blunden, A P Herbert). Lunch at Ocean Villas Tearooms, Auchonvillers, followed by afternoon visits to Serre Road and the Redan Ridge (Frederic Manning, Wilfred Owen). Evening lecture: Richard Aldington and Ivor Gurney: Survivors of a Kind. Free evening.

Day

4

Visits close to Arras including St Martin sur Cojeul and Heninel-Croisilles Road Cemetery (Siegfried Sassoon). Afternoon visits to Fampoux (German spring offensive 1918, Isaac Rosenberg) and Bailleul Road East Cemetery (grave of Rosenberg). Evening lecture: The War in 1918.

Day

5

Morning: visits exploring the 1918 battlefield experiences of Wilfred Owen, including the action at Joncourt for which he was awarded the Military Cross, ending at his grave in Ors. Transfer to Calais for afternoon departure by Eurotunnel, approximate return time to London Waterloo 1930.
