Itinerary

Day

1

Depart Heathrow 1050 on British Airways, arriving 1350 Washington Dulles Airport. Transfer by coach to Hotel Lombardy for two nights.

Day

2

Washington DC: Roosevelt Memorial, Washington Monument, Jefferson Memorial, Capitol Hill and Union Street Station. Afternoon: Washington National Cathedral and Hillwood House (grand collection of European decorative arts assembled by Marjorie Merriweather Post).

Day

3

Mount Vernon (Washington’s plantation home overlooking Potomac River), Woodlawn Plantation (Georgian-style mansion) and Pope-Leighey House by Frank Lloyd Wright. Transfer to Charlottesville for two nights at Omni Charlottesville Hotel.

Day

4

Charlottesville: Monticello (Jefferson’s hilltop plantation home), Thomas Jefferson Center (exhibits on life and work of Jefferson).

Day

5

University of Virginia (founded and designed by Jefferson) followed by Lexington (Stonewall Jackson’s house museum). Continue via Blue Ridge Parkway (mountain meadows, farmland, forests) and Natural Bridge to Peaks of Otter Lodge for overnight stay.

Day

6

Through Peaks of Otter to Poplar Forest (Jefferson’s remote private retreat). Continue to Appomattox (Civil War surrender site) and Richmond (Capitol designed by Jefferson). Transfer to Williamsburg for four nights at Williamsburg Lodge.

7

Historic Jamestowne (site of original Jamestown colony), Jamestown Settlement (living-history museum, museum of 17th century American history, colonists’ fort, Indian fort), battlefield at Yorktown (where British surrendered to George Washington in 1781).

Day

8

Plantation houses on James River: Sherwood Forest Plantation (owned by 10th president John Tyler), Westover (beautiful red brick mansion), Berkeley Plantation (birthplace of President Harrison), Shirley Plantation (Virginia’s oldest plantation).

Day

9

Historic Williamsburg: William and Mary College (Jefferson’s alma mater), Bruton Church (attended by Jefferson and Washington), Peyton Randolph House (home to Virginia’s representative to London), Governor’s Palace (final headquarters of British rule), Capitol (America’s first representative assembly). Free evening.

Day

10

Depart Williamsburg for Fredericksburg: Kenmore (plantation house built by Betty Washington Lewis). Transfer via Gunston Hall (English Georgian style house built for George Mason IV) to Washington DC for overnight stay at Hotel Lombardy.

Day

11

Independent visits to museum complex on the National Mall (National Gallery of Art, National Air and Space Museum, Freer Gallery of Art, Library of Congress, Supreme Court, National Archives). Transfer to Washington Dulles Airport, via Arlington National Cemetery, for 1830 departure.
