Itinerary

Day

1

Tour assembles 1400 at Mercure Cardiff Holland House Hotel and Spa for four nights. Orientation walking tour followed by St David’s Hall and the Cardiff Story (interactive city museum in the Old Library building). Evening lecture: Cardiff in the History of Glamorgan: An Introduction. Burges and the Butes.

Day

2

Morning: 12th century church of St John the Baptist and Cardiff Castle. Afternoon: Castell Coch with sumptuous interiors (built by Burges on the remains of a 13th-century fortification).

Day

3

Morning excursion to Butetown: Richard Roger’s Senedd (Senate) building for the Welsh Assembly, the Norwegian Church and the Pierhead Building. Afternoon: ferry to Penarth, Cardiff’s seaside resort where Marconi lived and from where he sent his first ever radio message. Return via Llandaff Cathedral housing Christ in Majesty by Jacob Epstein, one of the inspirations for Antony Gormley’s Angel of the North.

4

Morning visit to St Fagans (relocated houses, farm, school, chapel, Workmen’s Institute). Afternoon: Caerphilly Castle, the largest castle in Wales. Evening lecture: An Introduction to the Arts in the National Museum Wales.

5

Morning: National Museum Wales with introductory curator talk. Tour disperses at the museum. The coach will drop off at Cardiff Central railway station, returning to the hotel for 1200.
