Itinerary

Day

1

Depart Heathrow 0930 on British Airways arriving St Petersburg 1545.

Day

2

Morning lecture: The History of St Petersburg through its Architecture followed by orientation tour: St Nicholas’s Cathedral, Strelka, Kazan Cathedral, Nevsky Prospekt, Log Cabin of Peter the Great, and visit to the State Hermitage Collections Depository.

Day

3

Morning lecture: Highlights of Russian Painting in the State Russian Museum followed by guided tour of the State Russian Museum (world-class collections of Russian art housed in the Mikhailovsky Palace). Afternoon: Fabergé Museum and Peter and Paul Fortress (birthplace of St Petersburg). Free evening.

Day

4

Morning lecture: The History of the Hermitage Art Collections followed by first visit to Hermitage. Morning: Gold Room. Afternoon: Italian paintings from Simone Martini to Bernardo Bellotto.

Day

5

Whole-day excursion to the summer palaces at Tsarskoe Selo and Pavlovsk. Visits include the celebrated Catherine Palace and park (including the restored amber room and a special drinks reception in the amber workshops), followed by Pavlovsk Palace and English park and Temple of Friendship. Return via Chesma Church. Free evening or optional performance at Mariinsky Theatre (contact ACE for tickets).

6

Whole-day visit to Hermitage with special early opening. Morning: Dutch and Flemish paintings from Robert Campin to Rembrandt and van Dyck. Afternoon: Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, Picasso and Matisse collections in the General Staff Headquarters. Free evening.

7

Menshikov Palace, Yusupov Palace (18th century aristocratic family residence where Rasputin was murdered), Alexander Nevsky Monastery, Tikvin Cemetery (sculptural monuments to Russian writers and composers including Dostoyevsky, Borodin, Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov).

8

Monument to the Siege of Leningrad, Konstantinovsky Palace (President’s restored residence) at Strelna. Depart St Petersburg 1655, arriving Heathrow 1730.
