Itinerary

Day

1

Depart Gatwick 1230 on British Airways, arriving Venice 1535. Transfer to Udine in the Friuli-Venezia-Giulia region for four nights at the Astoria Hotel.

Day

2

Morning lecture. Whole-day excursion exploring the ancient city of Aquileia including the Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta (mosaics depicting scenes of the prophet Jonah, gospels, apostles and portraits of patrons, 11th and 12th century Byzantine frescoes) and Archaeological Museum (one of the most important museums of ancient Roman artefacts in the world), followed by Roman forum, harbour wharves, necropolis, and the Palaeo-Christian Museum.

3

Morning in Cividale: the Duomo (originally an 8th century structure, rebuilt 15th century), Archaeological Museum and Lombard Temple (fine Byzantine frescoes and stucco decorations). Afternoon in Udine: Duomo (14th century frescoes, museum of religious decorative arts) and the Diocesan Museum (housed in the Patriarchal Palace).

4

Morning in Grado: Basilica of Sant’Euphemia, Santa Maria delle Grazie and old town. Return to Udine via Palmanova (late 16th century defences and Civic Historical Museum). Late afternoon visit to Udine’s Civic Museums of History and Art (housed in the 16th century castle) and Piazza Libertà (15th century town hall and clock tower).
