Itinerary

Day

1

Depart Heathrow 1145 on British Airways, arriving Larnaca 1815. Transfer to Paphos for three nights at a four-star hotel.

Day

2

Morning lecture: Cyprus in geography and history. Paphos: Archaeological Park (Roman mosaics, Saranda Kolones medieval castle), District Archaeological Museum, church of Ayia Kyriaki Chrysopolitissa and Pillar of St Paul. Maa-Paleokastro: Bronze Age settlement and Museum of Mycenaean Colonisation.

3

Paphos, Hellenistic ‘Tombs of the Kings’, then to Yeroskipou for Church of Agia Paraskevi (9th to 15th century frescoes) and Folk Art Museum. Afternoon in Kouklia (Old Paphos: Sanctuary of Aphrodite and museum, Persian siege-mound, medieval sugar cane mill).

4

Kourion (archaeological site including theatre, stadium and sanctuary of Apollo Hylates), Kolossi (castle and sugar factory). Transfer to Limassol for three nights at Crowne Plaza Hotel.

5

Morning: Amathous archaeological site, Limassol Castle (medieval museum). Free afternoon. Evening lecture: Cypriot artefacts and art.

6

Journey into the Troodos Mountains to enjoy the scenery and to visit a selection of the richly painted medieval churches on the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Day

7

Depart for Nicosia. Morning visit to Choirokoitia Neolithic settlement (World Heritage site). Visit to Pano Lefkara (traditional lacemaking) then continue to Larnaka for the District Archaeological Museum, church of Ayios Lazaros and Kiti, church of Panayia Angeloktisti. Transfer to Nicosia for four nights at the Centrum Hotel.

8

Whole day in Nicosia: Cyprus Museum, Byzantine Museum, Ayios Ioannis Cathedral, House of the Dragoman Hadji Gheorgakis Kornesios. Cross to north Nicosia for Selimiye Mosque (formerly St Sophia Cathedral), Bedesten (St Nicholas church of the English) and Büyük Han (Ottoman caravanserai).

Day

9

Into northern Cyprus for St Hilarion Castle (mountaintop fortress) and Bellapais Abbey, probably the finest surviving Gothic monument in Cyprus. Afternoon: Kyrenia (castle and Shipwreck Museum).

Day

10

Morning: ancient Greek city of Salamis. Afternoon in Famagusta for walking tour including battlements, Cathedral of St Nicholas and other ruined medieval churches.

Day

11

Visit the monastery of Ayios Iraklidios at Politiko and Hala Sultan Tekke (burial place of Umm Haram, a close friend or relative of the Prophet Muhammad) outside Larnaca. Depart Larnaca 1450, arriving Heathrow 1800.
