Itinerary

Day

1

Depart Heathrow 1310 on British Airways, arriving Amsterdam 1530. Transfer to Zuid-Kennemerland National Park for six nights at Hotel Landgoed Duin en Kruidberg. Introductory lecture.

Day

2

Excursion to central Amsterdam: guided tour of the Rijksmuseum (17th century paintings and 18th century interiors and objets d’art with special focus on portraits of Amsterdam merchants), followed by some free time. Afternoon: Museum Van Loon (17th century canal house) followed by private canal cruise. Evening lecture: Amsterdam, the 17th Century Metropolis: Growth, Ownership and Comparisons Between City and Country Houses.

3

Morning excursion to Haarlem: walking tour (including an almshouse and a visit to the famous Church of Bavo) followed by Frans Hals Museum (17th century painting collection). Afternoon: Elswout House and gardens in Overveen, Huis te Manpad in Heemstede (buitenplaats dating from 1632 with beautiful interior and gardens) followed by visit and dinner at Beeckestijn House in Velsen-Zuid (impressive country house belonging to the Boreel family with one of the Netherlands’ first landscaped gardens and kitchen garden).

4

Private visit to Berg en Vaart (small buitenplaats with beautiful garden, palm house and orangery) in Ankeveen followed by the kitchen garden of Gooilust House. Afternoon: guided tour of Castle Sypesteyn (renowned Dutch porcelain collection) followed by Vreedenhoff House and garden (guided tour by local art historian). Evening dinner cruise on the Vecht River.

Day

5

Morning visit to Duivenvoorde Castle (one of the oldest castles in Holland). Afternoon: guided tour of Keukenhof Castle (turreted 17th century mansion) followed by some free time to explore the gardens.

Day

6

Morning: Beemster Polder (UNESCO World Heritage site), Museum Betje Wolff in Middenbeemster (house museum of Dutch writer) and Broek in Waterland (17th and 18th century village of wooden houses).

7

Depart Amsterdam 1140, arriving Heathrow 1200.
