Itinerary

Day

1

Depart Heathrow 1055 on British Airways, arriving Budapest 1610. Transfer to Mórahalom, near Szeged, for two nights at the Elixír Hotel.

Day

2

Morning at Lake Nagyszéksós (wetland habitat with nesting and migratory birds possibly including bitterns, herons and lapwings) and buffalo reserve. Visit Szeged for a walking tour (city hall, Dugonics Square and Cathedral) and evening at the local Wine Festival.

Day

3

Early transfer to the Körös-Maros National Park: White Lake at Kardoskút (rare saline lake), Szarvas (farm and rice fields possibly with purple herons, black-winged stilts and collared pratincole). Transfer to Dévaványa for two nights in national park accommodation.

Day

4

Morning at Réhely visitor centre (great bustard exhibition), Vésztő-Mágor (outlook tower). Afternoon at Biharuga for Bihar fish lakes and bird watching (searching for herons, spoonbills, hoopoes and eastern imperial eagle).

Day

5

Via the Hortobágy National Park and fish pools (morning walk looking out for purple herons, glossy ibises, spoonbills), to historic city of Eger. Three nights in Eger and the Hotel Eger & Park.

Day

6

Morning walking tour of Eger. Afternoon: Bükk Hill Plateau, searching for a variety of woodpeckers and owls.

Day

7

Whole-day exploration of the habitats of the Little Hortobágy (steppe flora and fauna including possibly great white egrets, pygmy cormorants, red-footed falcons and European rollers).

Day

8

Transfer to Budapest for 1710 departure, arriving Heathrow 1845.
