Itinerary

Day

1

Depart London Heathrow 1040 on British Airways, arriving Rome 1410. Transfer to Viterbo for six nights at Hotel Salus Terme. Introductory lecture: The Etruscans.

Day

2

Morning visits in Viterbo: 12th century cathedral of San Lorenzo, Papal Palace (Gothic loggia), Basilica of San Francesco (papal tombs in Cosmatesque style), the Rocca Albornoz (medieval fortress housing the National Etruscan Museum). Afternoon visit to the spectacular gardens of Villa Lante.

Day

3

Tuscania: magnificent Romanesque churches of Santa Maria Maggiore and San Pietro. Afternoon: Etruscan site of Vuler (museum and archaeological park).

Day

4

Morning: Sutri (Etruscan and Roman tombs, amphitheatre, cathedral with Cosmatesque floor). Afternoon visit to Cerveteri (UNESCO World Heritage site). Evening lecture: Medieval Tuscia.

Day

5

Morning: visits in Montefiascone (Romanesque church of San Flaviano) followed by Bolsena: complex of Santa Cristina (catacombs). Afternoon: Caprarola (Villa Farnese).

Day

6

Morning: Tarquinia (UNESCO World Heritage site). Afternoon visit to the Gothic-Renaissance Palazzo Vitelleschi (Etruscan National Museum housing remarkable sarcophagi, artefacts and decorations).

7

Free time. Depart Rome 1730, arriving Heathrow 1910.
