Itinerary

Day

1

Depart Heathrow 2040 on Sri Lankan Airlines.

Day

2

Arrive Colombo at 1240 and transfer to Hotel Pegasus Reef, Wattala for overnight stay.

Day

3

Visit to Sigiriya (World Heritage site, damsel rock paintings, pleasure gardens, vibrant birdlife). Transfer to Hotel Sigiriya for two nights.

Day

4

Sigiriya archaeological site for birdwatching. Evening: Popham Arboretum (protected forest area, opportunity to see slender loris).

Day

5

Morning: Kandy for Temple of the Tooth Relic (said to house a tooth of Buddha, opportunity to see a small range of waterbirds). Afternoon: Peradeniya Botanical Garden (over 10,000 trees, Indian flying fox, wintering migrants).

Day

6

Udawattakelle Forest Reserve (endemic birds, gold-fronted and blue-winged leafbirds). Travel to Nuwaraeliya, visiting tea plantation en route. Transfer to The Hill Club for two nights.

7

Visit to cloud forest of Horton Plains National Park: unique example of highland plateau with elfin forest and montane grassland (rich epiphytic fauna with many orchid species; endemic birds; mammals including Sambar deer, leopard, endemic purple-faced leaf monkey).

Day

8

Morning: Victoria Park. Travel to Yala National Park (one of Asia’s best mammal reserves) via Surrey Estate (birdwatching). Transfer to Cinnamon Wild Yala hotel for three nights.

9

Yala National Park: first full day safari to explore the park, its mammals, birds and marine habitats.

10

Yala National Park: second full day safari.

Day

11

Yala: free day at leisure in Yala; opportunity for birdwatching around the hotel. Transfer to Paradise Beach Club, Mirissa for two nights.

Day

12

Excursion by boat from Mirissa in search of blue whale, spinner dolphins, pantropical spotted dolphins, Bryde’s whale, sperm and short-finned pilot whales, pelagic birds.

Day

13

Mirissa. Transfer to Hotel Pegasus Reef, Wattala for overnight stay.

Day

14

Depart Colombo 1250, arriving Heathrow at 1910.
