Itinerary

Day

1

Depart Heathrow 0855 on British Airways, arriving Munich 1150. Transfer to Hotel am Mirabellplatz, Salzburg, for seven nights. Short walking tour including Franciscan Church and Nonnberg Abbey (Vespers performed by the Benedictine Sisters).

Day

2

Morning walking tour of Salzburg including Mozart’s birthplace museum and Wohnhaus. Afternoon: Residenz (Baroque residence of the Prince-Archbishops of Salzburg with state rooms and fine art collection). Evening: concert in Marble Hall of Mirabell Palace featuring works by Mozart, Vivaldi, Haydn & Beethoven.

Day

3

Morning: Festung Hohensalzburg (princely apartments, fortress museum). Afternoon: village of Oberndorf (with organ recital at parish church) and visit to Silent Night Chapel. Evening: Mozart dinner-concert at Stiftskeller St Peter.

Day

4

Morning excursion to Bad Ischl: Kaiservilla (summer residence of Habsburg emperors) and organ recital at Nikolaikirche (subject to confirmation). Afternoon: St Wolfgang Kirche. Free evening.

Day

5

Christmas Eve Morning lecture followed by Salzburg Christkindlmarkt. Evening: traditional Austrian Christmas Eve dinner followed by optional Mass in Salzburg Cathedral.

Day

6

Christmas Day Choral High Mass in Salzburg Cathedral followed by afternoon visit to Untersberg Mountain (with cable-car ride – weather permitting). Evening celebratory Christmas dinner.

Day

7

Excursion to island of Herreninsel on Chiemsee to visit Herrenchiemsee Palace (built by King Ludwig II). Evening: concert in Marble Hall, Mirabell Palace featuring works by Mozart, Vivaldi, Haydn & Beethoven.

8

Free time. Transfer to Munich for 1555 departure, arriving Heathrow 1700.
