Itinerary

Day

1

Depart Gatwick at 1300 on TAP Portugal, arriving Porto 1515. Transfer to Pousada Pestana Palácio do Freixo Hotel for three nights. Introductory lecture.

Day

2

Morning: Quinta de Villar d’Allen for guided tour of house and garden with the owners. Afternoon: walking tour of Baroque Porto (cathedral, 19th century Stock Exchange Palace, picturesque quayside).

Day

3

Whole-day excursion to Mosteiro de Landim (former monastery whose medieval cloister is the focal point for a romantic 19th century garden) and Guimarães (medieval castle and Ducal Palace).

Day

4

Drive south via Buçaco National Park (site of former Carmelite monastery, later a royal palace, surrounded by lush forest) to Coimbra. Afternoon tour including Baroque Joanina Library and University Botanic Garden. Overnight stay at Hotel Quinta das Lágrimas.

5

Morning: 12th century Monastery of Alcobaça (UNESCO World Heritage site and masterpiece of Cistercian Gothic art). Afternoon: transfer to Lisbon for Palace of Queluz (‘Portuguese Versailles’ with rich interiors and magnificent gardens). Three nights at the Pousada Palácio de Queluz Hotel.

Whole-day excursion to Sintra: Monserrate Palace (19th century palace with eclectic architecture and landscaped park), Quinta da Regaleira (eccentric gardens reflecting early 20th century interests in alchemy and the occult), Pena National Palace (flamboyant creation of Ferdinand II).

Day

7

Lisbon: waterfront Belém district (Manueline architecture, Jerónimos Monastery), afternoon in the lower town exploring the great squares and wide streets constructed after the 18th century earthquake. Evening of traditional Fado music.

Day

8

Morning visit to Palace of the Marquises of Fronteira, with Italianate gardens famous for their azulejos (blue and white tiles) depicting the arts and mythological scenes. Depart Lisbon 1305, arriving Gatwick 1540.
