Itinerary

Day

1

Depart London Heathrow on British Airways 1125. Arrive Belfast City Airport 1245 and continue to visit Glenarm Castle (home to one of the oldest walled gardens in Ireland). Transfer for two nights at Ballygally Castle Hotel. Evening: introductory lecture.

Day

2

Travel on scenic coastal route for visit to Dunlace Castle (medieval castle on cliff edge) and Giant’s Causeway (UNESCO World Heritage site).

3

Carrickfergus Castle (built by John de Courcy in 1177), SS Nomadic (last surviving White Star Line ship, built in Belfast’s Hamilton Dock) and Titanic Belfast (spectacular display located on the slipway where the ship was built). Transfer for five nights at The Old Inn, Crawfordsburn.

4

Downpatrick: St Patrick’s Grave and tours of Struell Wells, Inch Abbey and antiquities of the Down County Museum with Mike King, Director of the Down County Museum. Continue to Nendrum monastic site (excavated early medieval monastery with earliest known horizontal water mill in Europe).

Rowallane Garden (50 acre gardens laid out in the mid 1860s) and Castle Ward (18th century mansion famed for the combination of Palladian and Gothic revival styles).

6

Armagh: Armagh Public Library (founded in 1771), No 5 Vicar’s Hill (built in 1772 as the Diocesan Registry retaining many original features) and Armagh Cathedral. Continue to Navan Fort (one of Ireland’s most important archaeological sites).

7

Mount Stewart House (18th century mansion, imaginative formal gardens and landscaped grounds) and Grey Abbey (Cistercian abbey founded by John de Courcy).

Day

8

Ulster Museum (tour of antiquities with Tour Director and curator-led tour of modern works of art). Depart Belfast City 1505, arriving Heathrow 1630.
