Depart Manhattan and journey into the Hudson Valley, with visits to Lyndhurst (splendid Gothic Revival mansion from the 1830s), Sunnyside (former home of renowned American author Washington Irving), Philipsburg Manor (300-year-old house belonging to a family of Anglo-Dutch merchants). Transfer to Rhinebeck for three nights at the Beekman Arms.
Morning: West Point Military Academy and Museum (housing works by Hudson River Valley painter Robert Weir) and Boscobel House and Gardens (elegant Federal-period house museum with rich furniture and decorative arts collection).
