Itinerary

Day

1

Depart Gatwick 0945 on British Airways, arriving Málaga 1335. Continue to Córdoba for three nights at the Hotel NH Collection Amistad. Introductory lecture.

Day

2

Córdoba: Great Mosque, archaeological museum and Roman theatre, optional walking tour including the ruins of the Roman temple.

Day

3

Córdoba: the synagogue, Madinat al-Zahra, the Alcázar with its gardens, walking tour by the Guadalquivir River, Calahorra Tower (12th century fortified gate). Optional visits to Plaza del Potro and Museo de Bellas Artes. Free evening.

Day

4

Depart via Antequera for visits to dolmens (megalithic burial mounds), 14th century Alcazaba and Real Colegiata de Santa Maria la Mayor (an innovative Renaissance church). Continue to Granada for three nights at Hotel NH Collection Victoria. Evening lecture: The Alhambra, an ideal Andalusian palace?

The Alhambra palaces, Museo de la Alhambra, the citadel of the Alcazaba and Generalife with its gardens.

6

A walking tour around medieval Granada: Corral del Carbón (Islamic caravanserai), Alcaicería (recreation of the silk bazaar), madrassah (surviving oratory from the 14th century university), 11th century Islamic baths, Casas del Chapiz (16th century Morisco houses). Continue to St Nicholas Terrace (views of the Alhambra and Sierra Nevada), Renaissance cathedral and royal chapel (tombs of Ferdinand and Isabella, with the Queen’s collection of Flemish paintings).
