Itinerary

Day

1

Depart Heathrow 1125 on Air Malta, arriving Malta 1535. Transfer to Grand Hotel Excelsior, Valletta, for seven nights. Introductory talk and welcome drink.

Day

2

Walk into Valletta for the National Museum of Archaeology and The Malta Experience (audio-visual history). Excursion to the fishing village of Marsaxlokk and visit to Neolithic temples of Hagar Qim and Mnajdra.

Day

3

Excursion to Rabat: Domus Romana (Roman town house), St Paul’s Catacombs and paleochristian crypts. Continue to Mdina for walking tour and St Paul’s Cathedral.

Day

4

Morning lecture: The Knights of St John. Excursion to Vittoriosa (Birgu, the first home of the Knights) including Inquisitor’s Palace and Malta Maritime Museum. Afternoon: Malta At War Museum.

Day

5

Grand Master’s Palace and Palace Armoury, St John’s Co-Cathedral (Caravaggio’s The Beheading of St John the Baptist) and Casa Rocca Piccola (home of Admiral Don Pietro la Rocca). Evening lecture: Malta During the Second World War. Free evening.

Day

6

Newly-restored Fort St Elmo and the National War Museum. Afternoon: Lascaris War Rooms (nerve centre for defence of Malta and planning centre for invasion of Sicily).

Day

7

Whole-day excursion to the north of the island. Rotunda of St Marija Assunta in Mosta (fourth largest unsupported dome in Europe, pierced by a 200kg bomb during WWII), Ta’ Qali Crafts Village and Malta Aviation Museum, St Agatha’s Tower (the ‘Red Tower’) Imtarfa Military Cemetery (Commonwealth War Graves Commission).

Optional boat trip around the harbour (weather permitting). Depart Valletta 1655, arriving Heathrow 1925.
