Itinerary

Day

1

Depart Heathrow 1045 on British Airways, arriving Rome 1420. Transfer to Albergo Santa Chiara for five nights. Introductory talk.

Day

2

Morning talk followed by walking tour of Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. Afternoon: Colosseum and Musei Capitolini (home of the fine civic painting and sculpture collection).

Day

3

By coach to Ostia (ancient port of Rome). Return via the Baths of Caracalla (extensive ruins with mosaic decoration).

Day

4

Morning talk followed by Pantheon, Piazza Navona (Domitian’s Circus), Castel Sant’Angelo (Hadrian’s tomb) and Ara Pacis (altar in honour of Augustus). Afternoon: Trajan’s Column and Trajan’s Market. Free evening.

Day

5

By coach to Hadrian’s Villa at Tivoli. Return for afternoon visits to Museo Nazionale Romano (wonderful frescoes and mosaics) and Diocletian’s Baths.

6

Free morning. Depart Rome 1515, arriving Heathrow 1655.
