Itinerary

Day

1

Tour assembles 1300 at the Three Counties Hotel, Hereford, for four nights. Afternoon visit to Mappa Mundi exhibition followed by some free time. Evening lecture followed by concert at Hereford Cathedral: Ireland These things shall be; Smyth Mass in D.

Day

2

Optional Eucharist at Hereford Cathedral or free time. Afternoon concert at Hereford Shirehall: the Encore Ensemble performs music by Gavin Bryars with contributions from SHYPP (Supported Housing for Young People Project) directed by David Wordsworth. Afternoon lecture followed by evening concert at Hereford Cathedral: programme to include Holst The Planets.

Day

3

Morning lecture followed by excursion to Ludlow. Afternoon concert at Hereford Cathedral: Tenebrae directed by Nigel Short performs works by Elgar, Tavener, Gurney, Torsten Rasch, Judith Bingham, Howells, Vaughan Williams, Parry and Schoenberg. Evening concert at Hereford Cathedral: Elgar King Olaf.

Day

4

Morning lecture followed by excursion to The Firs, Lower Broadheath (Elgar’s birthplace). Afternoon concert at Holy Trinity Church: Gould Piano Trio and Robert Plane (clarinet) perform works by Ireland, Huw Watkins and Messiaen. Evening concert at Hereford Cathedral: Monteverdi Vespers.
