Tour assembles 1400 at Hyatt Regency Birmingham Hotel for four nights. Introductory lecture followed by guided walking tour of Birmingham.
Morning repertoire lecture followed by visit to Royal Birmingham Conservatoire for private recital: Elgar Violin Sonata, Op 82. Afternoon visits to the University of Birmingham: Cadbury Research Library (to view documents from the Elgar collection), University Music Department (where Elgar was the first Professor of Music – visit subject to confirmation) and opportunity to visit the Barber Institute of Fine Arts. Evening concert at the Symphony Hall featuring Cristian Măcelaru (conductor), Augustin Hadelich (violin) and City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra: Prokofiev The Love for Three Oranges (Suite); Beethoven Violin Concerto; Vaughan Williams Symphony No 4.
Morning visits to St Chad’s Cathedral (with organ recital – subject to confirmation) and St Mary’s Convent, Handsworth. Afternoon: Museum of the Jewellery Quarter. Evening performance at the Symphony Hall featuring St Petersburg Philharmonic, Yuri Temirkanov (conductor), Freddy Kempf (piano) and Nadine Koutcher (soprano): Prokofiev Classical Symphony, Op 25; Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No 3; Mahler Symphony No 4.
Whole day excursion to The Firs (Elgar’s birthplace), Worcester Cathedral and St George’s Church including illustrated talk: Elgar and the Midlands with musical examples (Elgar Vesper Voluntaries, Op 14). Continue to Malvern Hills for visit to Great Malvern Priory with private organ recital: Elgar Organ Sonata, Op 28.
Morning: guided tour of Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. Tour disperses 1215 at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery or 1230 at hotel.
