Depart Heathrow 0730 on Iberia via Madrid, arriving Bogotá 1535. Two nights at Hotel Augusta, Bogotá. Evening: introductory lecture.
Museo del Oro (extraordinary gold artefacts that first attracted the conquistadors), monuments of the colonial town, Museo de Arte Colonial, the Old Mint, Museo Quinta de Bolívar, funicular up to Virgin of Montserrat.
Transfer to Villa de Leyva via Lake Guatavita (the setting of the El Dorado legend) and Tunja (spectacular main square). Overnight stay in Villa de Leyva at Hotel La Posada de San Antonio.
Morning: Villa de Leyva (colonial architecture, 16th century olive trees and lively market). Afternoon transfer to Barichara for two nights at Hotel Hicasua.
Optional walk along Camino Real to Guarne. Afternoon: walking tour of Barichara (beautiful colonial town with elaborate 18th century cathedral).
Depart for Chicamocha Canyon followed by Barrancabermeja for overnight stay at Hotel Pipatón.
Transfer to island town of Mompox. This Andalusian-style town (situated in the former great waterway Magdalena’s estuary) was completely out of bounds to foreigners until only a few years ago. Two nights in Mompox at Hostal Doña Manuela.
Morning: Mompox (private palaces and jewellery workshops). Free afternoon.
Depart by boat via Magangué for Cartagena de Indias (historic old port with large and sensationally restored colonial centre), for two nights at Sofitel Legend Santa Clara.
Morning in Cartagena’s walled city: cathedral, 16th century Church of Santo Domingo, Museum of the Inquisition. Free afternoon and evening.
Morning: outlying Citadel and Convento de la Popa (secondary fortress used in the 19th century civil wars). Free afternoon.
Transfer to Bogotá for overnight stay at Hotel Augusta. Evening lecture and farewell dinner.
Morning: National Museum of Colombia. Depart Bogotá 1705 via Madrid.
